For a while now, Microsoft have provided a free Jupyter Notebook service on Microsoft Azure. At the moment they provide compute kernels for Python, R and F# providing up to 4Gb of memory per sessio…
How we implemented consistent, distributed, incremental backup in CockroachDB.
Relational databases have been a mainstay for decades. But what happens when you need to scale out a relational database like Postgres? This post announces Citus Cloud 2, the latest version of the Citus managed database as a service that scales out Postgres horizontally in the cloud.
Welcome to Part 2 of a blog series that introduces TensorFlow Datasets and Estimators. We're devoting this article to —a data structure describing the features that an Estimator requires for training and inference. As you'll see, feature columns are very rich, enabling you to represent a diverse range of data.
Just over a year ago Google made all the open source code on GitHub available for querying within BigQuery and as if that wasn’t enough you can run a terabyte of queries each month for free!
In the TrueNAS blog, discover the latest in scalable data storage solutions. Stay updated on the latest innovations in TrueNAS technology.
Of all the programming styles I have learned, dynamic programming is perhaps the most beautiful. It can take problems that, at first glance, look ugly and intractable, and solve the problem with clean, concise code. Where a simplistic algorithm might accomplish something by brute force, dynamic programming steps back…
Today marks the 10-year anniversary of Amazon's Dynamo. Here are some reflections on ten years of NoSQL databases
Here follows the original "manifesto" from late 2014 proposing the idea for what became Upspin . The text has been lightly edited to remove...

tl;dr: this is not an audit and I take no responsibility for your backups, but I had a quick look at the crypto and I think I’m going to use restic for my personal backups.
Personal blog about system engineering and devops
On this post we're going to talk about Eventual Consistency in the context of lock-free and wait-free data structures, with focus on the C++...
Mapping strings to things makes sense. You take a meaningful string and you assign it a value. As with most things we do in programming there are many pitfalls to approaching a problem. So, lets explore some of them!
This blog is out of date. Please refer here for the updated info. When Jeff and I heard about this service, we both were curious on the meaning of the name Macie. Of course, Jeff being a great researcher looked up the name Macie and found that the name Macie has two meanings. It has […]
NoSQL databases were the future. MongoDB was the database for “modern” web engineers and used by countless startups. What happened?
AWS customers in a wide variety of industries use Amazon DynamoDB to store mission-critical data. Financial services, commerce, AdTech, IoT, and gaming applications (to name a few) make millions of requests per second to individual tables that contain hundreds of terabytes of data and trillions of items, and count on…
We were inspired after Paul Dix, Co-Founder and CTO of InfluxData spoke at PromCon and received interest in more integration between Prometheus and InfluxDB. We are excited to introduce InfluxDB Prometheus Interoperability - InfluxDB 1.4, which now sup...
A few weeks back, we published a draft of an article entitled _Monotonicity Types_. In it, we describe a type system which we hope can aid the design of distributed systems by tracking monotonicity with types....
CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database, loosely patterned after Google Spanner and designed for semi-synchronous networks. It speaks the PostgreSQL wire protocol , supports a reasonable dialect of SQL , and combines replication for durability with transparent scale-out sharding for large tables. Its most…
