About Hacker Blog Posts
A reading list built from 20 years of Hacker News: 80,747 blog posts from 32,497 blogs. Together they collected 20,158,802 points and 10,634,560 comments.
What counts as a blog post
A post is included when it comes from a blog (a person's own site or newsletter, or a company's or project's blog) and it either
- was popular: at least one Hacker News submission reached 100 points. Early HN had far fewer voters, so the bar is 50 points up to 2009 and 75 in 2010; or
- keeps getting cited: ten or more different people linked to it in their comments. 1,160 posts are here for this reason alone.
Home pages, Show HN projects, PDFs, product pages, docs and tools are left out. So are news sites, magazines, code hosts, social networks and video sites.
How it is built
- Every story and comment ever posted to Hacker News is read from the public ClickHouse mirror of the HN API, which stays minutes behind the live site.
- URLs are normalized (scheme,
www., tracking parameters and trailing slashes removed), so resubmissions of the same post are merged into one entry with all of its discussions. - Links inside comments are extracted and counted by distinct commenter. A post cited by many different people is a good sign of lasting value.
- Each website is classified as a personal blog, company blog, media outlet or something else, and each post is checked to be an actual written piece and tagged with topics. Both steps use Anthropic's Claude.
- Each post's page is fetched once for its description, author and date, and each blog's home page for its name, feed and icon.
New stories are picked up several times a day, and comment citations are recounted daily. Ranking uses the points of a post's best submission. Its other submissions are listed on the post's page.

Mistakes
Automatic classification gets some things wrong: a company newsroom filed as a blog, a personal site filed as a company, a post tagged with the wrong topic. The point is to make the best writing that passed through Hacker News easy to find. Hacker Blog Posts is not affiliated with Y Combinator or Hacker News.
