Modern Pascal is still in the race (2022)
A recent poll on the Lazarus/FPC forum highlighted a fact: pascal coders are older than most coders. Usually, at our age, we should be managers, not developers. But we like coding

So you want custom allocator support in your C library
Users of mature C libraries conventionally get to choose how memory is allocated — that is, when it cannot be avoided entirely . The C standard never laid down a convention — perhaps for the better — so each library re-invents an allocator interface. Not all are created equal, and most repeat a few fundamental…

Twenty years of blogging
Twenty years... a significant chunk of a human's adult life; while so many things in my life have changed since May 2003, the blog has remained a constant companion. This milestone inspired me to do some archaeology using the amazing Wayback Machine . It didn't have the very first post, but I dug up one from just a…

Hashmaps in Factor are faster than in Zig
Recently, I was looking at the Zig programming language . As I often do, I started implementing a few typical things in new languages to learn them. Well, one of them was super slow and Zig is supposed to be super fast, so I was trying to understand where the disconnect was and compare it to Factor !

Removing garbage collection from the Rust language (2013)
I've been floating ways to simplify the memory management story in Rust around the core team lately. Memory management is a contentious topic, since we've worked hard to get to the current state of things, and with the push toward stability lately, there is a (quite reasonable!) resistance to any changes at this…

Most UI applications are broken real-time applications
I’ve been programming for a long time. When I say long time, I mean decades, with an S. Hopefully that’s long enough. In that time my experience has primarily been programming for contemporary platforms, e.g. Linux, Windows, macOS on desktop-class or server-class CPU architectures. Recently, I embarked on building a…
