I wanted to write a thoughtful article in response to Dominik Wagner’s “On my misalignment with Apple’s love affair with Swift” . During my research I realized, that Chris Lattner had already done this. Sort of. 17 months before Dominik published his piece.
Today you are frustrated.
The GCC 14 release series differs from previous GCC releases in a number of ways . Some of these are a result of bug fixing, and some old behaviors have been intentionally changed to support new standards, or relaxed in standards-conforming ways to facilitate compilation or run-time performance.
In my last post I showed what makes the Nim programming language special. Today, let’s consider Nim from another angle: What makes Nim a practical programming language?
## IntroductionThis is a small Ruby tutorial that should take no more than 20 minutesto complete. It makes the assumption that you already have Ruby installe...
You're probably reading this page because you've attempted to access some part of my blog (Wandering Thoughts) or CSpace , the wiki thing it's part of. Unfortunately you're using a browser version that my anti-crawler precautions consider suspicious, most often because it's too old (most often this applies to versions…

The question of which language suits best for compiler development is a frequent one amongst language enthusiasts (e.g., see discussions here , here , and here ). Sadly, most of the commenters either 1) just answer with their language of choice without any explanation, or 2) provide a vague explanation without any…
write Python that’s faster than C by optimizing your code, adding standard type annotations, and using Mypyc.
One recent development is the ability to compile Java programs into self-contained native binaries. This provides more convenient single-file distributions, faster startup time, and lower memory footprint, at a cost of slower creation time and limitations around reflection and dynamic classloading. This article…
C23 has a new rule for struct, union, and enum compatibility finally appearing in compilers starting with GCC 15, released this past April, and Clang later this year. The same struct defined in different translation units (TU) has always been compatible — essential to how they work. Until this rule change, each such…
Transducers are composable algorithmic transformations. They are independent from the context of their input and output sources and specify only the essence of the transformation in terms of an individual element. Because transducers are decoupled from input or output sources, they can be used in many different…

We wrote a Brainfuck compiler back in April . That one developed a simple architecture to support multiple backends. Today, I want to write a new Brainfuck compiler. One that can only run on a single system, OpenBSD /amd64. And one that is as small as I can possibly make it. I broke into the sub-256 bytes club with my…
Today, we are announcing an exciting development for the Swift programming language: its migration to a dedicated GitHub organization at GitHub.com/swiftlang.

Welcome! This is a series of blog posts that shows you how to build a text editor in Rust.
Prolog is a language that excels at defining and exploring relationships. Let’s take advantage of that and use Prolog to explore a few of the myriad of relationships that exist between chords and the guitar’s fretboard.

Zngur (/zængɑr/) is a C++/Rust interop tool. It tries to expose arbitrary Rust types, methods, and functions while preserving their semantics and ergonomics as much as possible. Using Zngur, you can use arbitrary Rust crates in your C++ code as easily as using them in normal Rust code, and you can write idiomatic…
