Postgres 11 is almost here, in fact the latest beta shipped today, and it features a lot of exciting improvements. If you want to get the full list of features it is definitely worth checking out the release notes, but for those who don’t read the release notes I put together a run down of some what I consider the…
(Spanner vs. Calvin, Part 2) [TL;DR I wrote a post in 2017 that discussed Spanner vs. Calvin that focused on performance differences. Th...
Back in the early 1980s, Dr. David DeWitt – who you might know from past PASS Summit keynotes, formerly of Microsoft (LinkedIn) – was working on measuring database performance. His team wrote a benchmark, ran it against Oracle, and Oracle didn’t fare well in the results. Oracle reacted as one would expect – they were…
I wanted to see how daily patterns emerge at the individual level and how a person’s entire day plays out. So I simulated 1,000 of them.

PostgreSQL 11 includes a new component in the execution engine: a JIT expression compiler. A benchmark comparison shows up to 29.31% speed improvements in PostgreSQL 11 using the JIT expression compiler, executing TPC-H Q1 at scale factor 10 in 20.5s instead of 29s when using PostgreSQL 10.
Like a lot of people, I was intrigued by “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration”, an anonymous New York Times op-ed written by a “senior official in the Trump administration”. And like many data scientists, I was curious about what role text mining could play.

I’ve compiled a list of Python tutorials and annotated analyses. I've tried to list pages that are accessible to social scientists with little background in Python and/or machine learning.
Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies have captured the imagination of technologists, financiers, and economists. Digital currencies are only one application of the underlying blockchain technology. Earlier this year, we made the Bitcoin dataset publicly available for analysis in Google BigQuery. Today we’re making the…
PostgreSQL has a rich collection of extensions and nearly 100 different data types, each with their own tuned indexing or specialized functions. You probably already use integers and text, and today we're going to explore a few less-used but incredibly powerful PostgreSQL data types.
Lesser-known but idiomatic pandas features for those already comfortable with Pandas' basic functionality and concepts.
How a seemingly minor enhancement in Postgres 11 fills one of the system’s biggest operational holes.
You're probably reading this page because you've attempted to access some part of my blog (Wandering Thoughts) or CSpace , the wiki thing it's part of. Unfortunately you're using a browser version that my anti-crawler precautions consider suspicious, most often because it's too old (most often this applies to versions…
At JupyterCon, I learned three things: reactive notebooks are the future, Jupyter is the new Bash, and data science is a gateway drug.
2019-04-10: The long fork test used in this analysis contained a bug which caused it to (in many cases) fail to identify long fork anomalies—though we did find instances of long fork using other tests. We have re-checked Dgraph 1.0.13 with a corrected checker, and its long fork tests still pass.
Event sourcing and CQRS gained a lot of popularity recently. The advantages are obvious and they share a very peculiar symbiosis with the…
This article gives an overview of the implementation and performance of two recent additions to LocustDB, an extremely fast open-source analytics database built in Rust. The first addition is suppo…
