A Case of Stolen Source Code

Last week, for about three days, the macOS video transcoding app HandBrake was compromised . One of the two download servers for HandBrake was serving up a special malware-infested version of the app, that, when launched, would essentially give hackers remote control of your computer.

A Prototype Original iPod

Now, when we look back, we can pretty clearly see that the iPod was the genesis of a totally different kind of Apple — an Apple willing to enter new markets and make the best version of that new thing. Sure, Apple had made other things before ( QuickTake ! PowerCD !) but they never really felt committed to those…

ITunes 11 and Colors

iTunes 11 is a radical departure from previous versions and nothing illustrates this more than the new album display mode. The headlining feature of this display is the new view style that visually matches the track listing to the album’s cover art. The result is an attractive display of textual information that…

About Gatekeeper

Today’s Mountain Lion announcement introduces an important new security feature, called Gatekeeper, in addition to the “sandboxing” feature that premiered in Lion. I’d like to talk a little bit about it, and why it’s important to all Mac users.

The Story of Playdate

I recently posted the sixth episode of the Panic Podcast — a wide-ranging look into the creation of Playdate , our upcoming hand held video game system, based on over nine hours of conversation. It’s a really special listen. But I’m told not everybody listens to podcasts (outrageous), so I’ve made it a (long) blog…

Panic’s lost 1982 artwork. Found.

As you probably know, in the late 70’s Panic was writing VAX/VMS automation code for the textile industry. Cotton attenuators, zipper sublimation, loom dynamics, that sort of thing. What you might not know is that, once the early 80’s arrived, Panic got hit hard with two things: unkempt mutton chops, and Pac-Man Fever.
