Yesterday's post enumerated # blog-topics related to understanding and using shell. Today's post started out as a "grab bag" of other topics, but is now centered around problems with # distributed-systems .
Please read this update instead: Why Create a New Unix Shell? (2021) . This page is obsolete!
This post has everything you need to know about xargs , an essential tool for shell programming . It's based on my # comments on this "wrong" post:
On a lobste.rs thread about the rationale for the Fennel language, I posted this summary of why Oil exists:
C++, a "Reality sandwich", and an Octopus.
This post takes a short break from ASDL to expand on one of my Hacker News comments.
Narrow waists: an idea in software architecture that relates to networking, operating systems, language design, compilers, and distributed systems.
As noted in ASDL Implementation and Use Cases , I began with a simple AST interpreter for OSH, thinking that the two languages could share the same AST.
Three months ago, in Roadmap #5 , I wrote that OSH will be a better shell for building Linux distributions . It will run existing code, including bash scripts, but it's stricter and easier to debug.
As discussed in the January blog roadmap , I want to concretely describe a reduced Oil language , and see if we can get it "done" in 2020.
When you hear the term, you should picture an hourglass with M things on one side, N on the other, and an important concept in the middle.
This post explains the project's motivation from several perspectives. Unix shell is an old and successful technology, so there are many ways of looking at it.
